Victoria's Name

The state was named after the Queen of England, and the town Melbourne was named in 1837, after her Prime Minister, Lord Melbourne. In 1851 the colony of Victoria was created. The settlement had a free-enterprise spirit, leading to clashes with Sydney, as they often turned away convict ships.

Goddess of Victory

The name Victoria, after which two British Queens have been named, comes from the Latin word for Victory. The word for Victory was synonymous in Roman times with the Goddess of Victory, so perhaps in a sense the Goddess of Victory can be considered another of Victorias symbols. The Greek Goddess Nike is the Goddess which the Romans changed the name of to make her their own. Nike appears on every Olympic medal, which possibly explains why Victorian sportspeople do so well in winning Olympic medals!
