Parks and Protected Areas

It contains a staggering 1966 separate Protected Areas with a total land area of 33,780 kmē (14.84% of the state s area). 36 of these are National parks, totalling 25,774 kmē (11.32% of the state s area).

The Parks are managed by Parks Victoria, a state government organisation. There are also many smaller state areas which are subject to commercial activity such as logging.  Below the Land Based parks is a list of Coastal and Marine Parks.

    The Victorian Government has created a system of 13 Marine National Parks and 11 smaller Marine Sanctuaries. These parks and sanctuaries will protect 5.3% of Victoria's coastal waters, safeguarding important marine habitats and species, significant natural features, cultural heritage and aesthetic values.
