Ferdinand von Mueller was born in Rostock Germany. He came to Australia in 1848 for health reasons, after having graduated from the University of Kiel with a Ph D.

From 1853, he was Victoria's Government Botanist, a position he held for 43 years. From 1857-1873, he was also the Director of the Melbourne Botanical Gardens, where he was directly involved in their laying out and design.


Amongst his many achievements, he was a founder of the Royal Society of Victoria, and President of the royal Geograohical Society, Victorian Branch. As a German Australian , he was also involved in the Melbourne Liedertafel and the Turn Vereimn.


Mueller earned an international reputation for discovering and describing Australian plants. He was knighted by Queen Victoria, and was awarded a barony by the King of Wurttemburg in 1871.
